MIKE THORNTON FSCTE has been involved with telecommunications since 1983 and, over the last 26 years, has worked in a variety of roles requiring an in-depth engineering understanding as well as management technique. These have taken him to the USA, several European countries, Pakistan and the People’s Republic of China.
At his heart, he is one of ‘a regretfully shrinking breed of component-level design engineers’. He was originally involved in coaxial RF design but more latterly his work encompasses optical and microwave networking - developing and designing networks for the ever-expanding needs of the bandwidth-hungry market. He has most enjoyed the start-up phases of a project where fast and accurate decision-making is essential.
Mike has worked in, for or around most of the UK cable industry at one time or another. This has ranged from personally installing 5.8GHz pointto-point systems in the rural wireless network in his home village to managing a team of over 350 managers, engineers and administrators in his days as Managing Director of the engineering division at Comtel. Mike is a member of the SCTE Executive Committee and also Chairman of the SCTE's Training and Membership committees.
