Dr Roger Blakeway honoured in Euro 50
Dr Roger Blakeway PhD, CEng FIEE, FSCTE, President of the SCTE, has been honoured with inclusion in The Euro 50 in 2011.
The Euro 50 honours the achievements of individuals working across the Pay-TV and broadband industries. An annual publication now in its tenth year, part of Digital TV Europe, the Euro 50 celebrates those who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and vision in their fields and made a significant contribution to the strength of their organisation or the industry itself. It has become the definitive “who’s who” of the year’s most influential people in the broadband and Pay-TV industries.
Dr Blakeway has led the Society successfully for most of the last decade, re-branding the organisation and significantly increasing its membership as well as introducing bursaries and growing the Society in new market and emerging market areas. Last year, he signed an MoU with Indian government agency, BECIL, for the training and certification of broadband technicians and engineers using SCTE course materials.
He currently represents the SCTE on BSI, CENELEC and IEC Standards Committees and is Chairman of the BSI Cable Standards Committee. He represents the Society as a board member on the International Broadcasting Convention Partnership which organises the Amsterdam Convention. Roger is also a keen ‘Radio Ham’ in his spare time.
Roger Blakeway PhD, CEng FIEE, FSCTE researched solid state physics at Birmingham University before joining Lucas Industries to work on semiconductors and integrated circuits. His career developed into systems engineering and he spent two years on secondment to the MOD working as a Principle Scientific Officer in fields related to electro-optics and television imaging. He then spent some five years with Scicon, a systems company, where he was Head of the Engineering Division. He joined Racal-Oak in 1983 where he was responsible for the transfer of design and production of the ‘Orion’ satellite encryption system to Europe and the introduction of the Oak ‘Sigma’ scrambling system for cable and broadcast applications.
In 1985, he joined Westminster Cable Television to set up its engineering, computing and studio facilities and remained there as Head of Technical Operations until 1989. After a short period in telecommunications as Technical Director of Paknet, a joint Racal-Mercury venture, he rejoined the cable TV industry with Videotron where he was Director of Corporate Engineering. Within Cable & Wireless, he acted as Consultant on CATV and Digital TV system aspects. Roger joined DIVA UK in August 1999 as its Technical and Operations Director, Europe to work on VOD system implementations.
