21815 - SCTE Broadband Feb2023 COMPLETE v3
2 Vol. 45 No. 1 - February 2023 Issue Another new year begins and we have so much packed into this issue. First of all, we are delighted to welcome three new corporate members to the SCTE ® family, names that will be familiar to many of you: DKT A/S, TRIAX and STL (Sterlite Technologies Ltd). You’ll see a little write up about them all on page 4 and 5. We also extend our congratulations to our President Anthony Basham, who has been appointed CEO at DKT A/S. Fantastic news, we are all delighted for you Tony. In early January we visited our friends at Bridge Technologies, spent time with Tim, Damian and the inimitable Simen Frostad, and were dazzled by their impressive offices in Oslo. We heard all about the origins of the company and came away feeling that Simen’s commercial and technical vision have continually been ahead of the curve, and his influence on the trajectory of IP transmission that we all take for granted has been considerable. We interviewed Simen at length on his career and achievements on page 30, the first of a three-part series over the course of the year. After a long COVID-induced hiatus, it was an absolute pleasure to attend the SCTE Benelux Dinner in Woerden, Netherlands last month. What a treat it was to meet so many other SCTE members over a sumptuous meal and catch up again after all this time. Peter Veerman and his team did a marvellous job, thank you so much for a lovely couple of days. More details on page 10. As the fibre roll out continues into 2023, we examine the economic and geopolitical landscape, looking at what is around the corner as providers start consolidating and looking at life as service providers, as well as the obstacles preventing upskilling that’s so vital for progress in this area. You can read all about it in our Long Read on page 14. We have some excellent data for you to digest in this issue. As part of our Sustainability Focus, our good friends at S&T Iskratel have published the results of a survey of providers in the UK on page 44, with surprising, if slightly negative results. It demonstrates one certainty; that while we are all talking the talk, walking the walk is still a way off for many, and as an industry we still have a lot of work to do if we are to tackle climate change in any meaningful way. Meanwhile we have an interview with our friends at FTTH ahead of their show in April in Madrid, finding out what they have to offer at this event and how it differs from last year. We also heard about the developments at Akamai and their recent acquisition of Linode; we talked to Natalie Billingham and Pavel Despot about how data centres fit into their long- term business strategy. It’s been a busy few months at the SCTE and we are delighted to announce a season of lectures, webinars and events for our members, not least the return of our annual dinner. You’ll see details of these throughout this edition, starting with the Spring Lecture on March 30 in Birmingham. Put July 30 in your diaries as that’s our Summer Lecture and Activity Day, taking place at the beautiful Tylney Hall in Hook, Hampshire. We have an excellent line up of speakers for this event, covering themes such as investment, government lobbying, network software and implementation. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet with friends, network and learn about a new area of the business. Are you interested in speaking at one of our events? Drop us a line - it would be great to hear from you. Our technical section is bursting at the seams too: we have a standards update from our Exec Committee member Dave Hodges and various white papers from our friends at CommScope, Synamedia and Intel, covering FTTH, video encoding and Wi-Fi 6. Altogether lots to get your teeth into in this issue and as always, we want to hear from you, the SCTE members and the wider community, so don’t be shy, get in touch if you have ideas for editorial, white papers, lectures or webinars. The SCTE ® is your organisation after all, and we are here to support you. Broadband Journal - February 2023 issue Editor’s Letter Welcome to the February issue of Broadband Journal.
