2 Vol. 44 No. 3 - September 2022 Issue It’s been a busy few months at Broadband Journal, reflective of the wider industry in general, which has clearly and heartily embraced trade shows, conferences and lectures again as normal service resumes. This issue is focused on the collective achievements of the SCTE’s Summer Lecture in the UK, ANGA COM in Cologne and Fibre to the Home in Vienna, after a hiatus of over two years. We also look ahead to the Cable Hall of Fame gala night taking place in New York City at the Rockefeller Center in September, as well as the return of IBC in Amsterdam, which is revving up as I write this. To welcome them back we interviewed CEO Mike Crimp on page 50, who tells us about the upcoming show, its themes and direction, with a nod to previous events and how IBC has evolved over time. Our Long Read this time examines an announcement by the FIDO Alliance, an industry association bursting with household names including Google, Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft, who recently committed to the eradication of passwords over the course of the coming year. On the surface this seems like a blessed relief; who hasn’t experienced the frustration of forgotten passwords, resetting them, setting them again? The amount of man hours wasted daily on a collective basis by this process must hugely impact the world’s global productivity, so of course this is good news. But there are serious implications. We welcome editorial on page 54 from out latest Corporate Member, Slovenian communications provider Iskratel, who provide one of several pieces on sustainability in this issue. The race to achieve net-zero status is stalling, requiring urgent action. Iskratel compare this emergency with the caves in Slovenia still stuffed with rubbish, a hangover from its days as part of Communist Yugoslavia. Clearing these has become an increasingly pressing need over the years but somehow just hasn’t got done. Our interview with Rahul Puri of STL on page 36, also looks at the urgent need to implement net-zero targets industry-wide and provides inspiring examples of what STL is already doing in its plants globally. Our latest Unplugged interview is face-to-face with Simon Holden, Chief Operating Office at CityFibre, something of a celebrity altnet these days, awash with recent industry accolades including the FTTH Operator Award at the FTTH show in May. Simon took time out to talk to Broadband on page 28 about the company’s progress, vision and ambitious plans for the future. We also welcome a fascinating overview of the current broadband and broadcast landscape in Norway by Simen K Frostad of Bridge Technologies, one of our Corporate Members, and a longtime supporter of the SCTE. You can read all about this on page 26. This issue is also crammed with information in our technical section about low latency, multi-faceted automation and takes a deep dive into 5G. Equally we are delighted to welcome editorial from our friends at Cable Center (page 46), Salumanus (page 40), EXFO (page 58) and our industry partners INCA (page 42). Finally our Spotlight section returns to sustainability, looking at how audiences can remain engaged while reducing our carbon footprint. Thanks to our friends at Ateme for their insight (page 80).
