20639 - SCTE Broadband May2020 COMPLETE v1

2 Vol. 42 No. 2 - May 2020 Issue commentary SCTE in Focus Welcome to the May 2020 issue of SCTE’s Broadband Journal ! COVID-19 has highlighted the need for secure and reliable worldwide communications networks. The COVID-19 outbreak and worldwide reaction to the pandemic will force companies to radically rethink how they operate and embrace technological investment, ABI Research told Broadband Journal . This includes a more concerted move to virtual workspaces and practices as well as higher pressure on operator networks, which remain vital during this period. We examine the potential COVID-19 operator impact globally on page 50 and uncover how one SCTE corporate member is supporting network operators to cater for increased demands during COVID-19 on page 44. This May 2020 issue of SCTE’s Broadband Journal also features topics such as 5G, fibre for smart cities and new amplifier technology. Support for members during COVID-19 COVID-19 has also impacted the Society’s 75th anniversary celebrations this year, as various exhibitions and conferences have announced postponements and cancellations. The SCTE office is now closed but SCTE staff, working from home, are still active and ready to support its members. Please feel free to email us on office@thescte.eu For its 75th anniversary year, as a gift to its members, the SCTE has made a free special edition of its online Fibre Optic Transmission for Technicians course available to members on the www.broadbandtraining.eu website. Please request a log-in at www.broadbandtraining.eu/lms A free special online edition of the SCTE’s Introduction to DOCSIS 3.1 course (via its new Learning Management System) has also been made available to all SCTE members. This course is free to access - please email office@broadbandtraining.eu for a username and password. To further support our members, we have also created a COVID-19 toolkit with hints, tips, advice, best practice news and guidance on working during the pandemic. This can be accessed on our website at https://www.thescte.eu/ resources/covid-19-toolkit An eye on events The COVID-19 outbreak has also meant, in common with other event organisers, that we have sadly postponed our events this year. The health and safety of our members is always paramount. This includes the Society’s 75th Anniversary Annual Gala Awards Dinner at the Tower of London in June, which has now been postponed to 26 June 2021 , and its Summer Lecture which will now be held on 7 July 2021 at Mercedes-Benz World in the UK. Our Spring Lecture has been moved to 24 March 2021 (National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, UK). Our 75th Anniversary conference day at ANGA COM this month was also cancelled, as ANGA COM did not take place in Cologne this year. As we went to press, we learned that IBC2020 has been cancelled as a physical event and will be a virtual conference this year (affecting the SCTE Benelux Lecture at IBC). We will take a view, over the next two months, on our Autumn Lecture and AGM ( 7 October 2020 ) in London and keep you updated. All our events next year will celebrate the SCTE’s 75+1 Anniversary year in 2021. We hope you will join us at these. We are exploring all options, including virtual and digital, to give you access to new presentations and information during the year. Stay tuned for further developments on this! If you wish to contribute to the SCTE’s special 75th anniversary brochure, please see page 9 or email me at sara.waddington@thescte.eu Many thanks to all members who completed our membership survey (see page 5). Your feedback helps to ensure that we keep providing the services you want to receive every year. If there are other ways that we can help or support you, please don’t hesitate to let us know by emailing office@thescte.eu .
