- Executive Committee
PAUL SMITH joined Cablevision (Wellingborough) in 1972 as an apprentice technician and completed his HND in Electrical Engineering at Wellingborough Tresham College. He began his interesting career in Cable TV with a participation in the build of an experimental community cable television station in 1974; this gave him his first insight into the issues of RF reverse path with the studio's transmission link to the headend play-out centre. Later, Paul was involved in the reception of satellite TV and an early Pay-TV trial.
Paul left to join Philips Cable Television (Northampton) in 1986, where he was appointed Senior Engineer and responsible for the VHF/UHF networks. After acquisitions by various companies, Paul became a Principal Engineer at ntl in 1999 with responsibilities for the introduction and support of digital TV into the HFC network. Paul now works in the HFC Access Engineering team at Virgin Media with an enjoyable role in the type approval testing of new HFC products and systems at the Birmingham Optical and RF Test facility. Paul is currently Chairman of the SCTE Papers’ Committee.
