
![]() | John Callas BSc studied Electrical & Electronic Engineering at Athens University, graduating in 1974. He then worked as a sound recordist and 16/35mm film cameraman on news and current affairs programmes for ERT (Hellenic Radio & TV) in Athens. During this period he travelled extensively around the world. He is an honorary member of The TV News Associations of Greece. In 1977, he moved to England and worked for the BBC News and Current Affairs Department as 16mm Film Cameraman. He moved to Cadbury Schweppes as the Audio Visual Manager responsible for all in house visual communications and new product launches. In 1988, he worked as a Broadcast Consultant, designing Broadcast TV Studios for the Greek TV channels. With the advent of satellite communication he became the design engineer for MidWest Commutations, a US company which built the very early satellite uplink vehicles and Earth Stations in the UK. These vehicles have been used by British Aerospace, JSAT, BBC, Telespatsio and the Swedish Space Corporation. In 1992, he joined Birmingham Cable, a Comcast Franchise, as Head-end Manager. Soon after that he was promoted to CATV Engineering Manager responsible for the 500K homes passed by Birmingham Network. When Telewest acquired Birmingham Cable he worked as Principal Engineer for the Corporate Engineering Department. During this time, he was part of the team that built the first CWDM solution for narrowcast services in the UK. Other major projects included the upgrade solution for the old Cabletime Network to produce the first Totally Digital Network (TDN) in the UK. Recently, he has been in charge of Telewest's Head-end and Hubs Infrastructure design. John Callas's job title is Principal Engineer, Virgin Media. |
