20682 - SCTE Broadband Aug2020 COMPLETE press

2 Vol. 42 No. 3 - August 2020 Issue commentary SCTE in Focus Welcome to the August 2020 issue of SCTE’s Broadband Journal ! COVID-19 has impacted all aspects of a service provider’s business, but using new processes, tools and technologies to keep customers and technicians safe during the pandemic has become a prime focus, replacing the relentless drive to reduce costs. There is no established playbook to follow for these types of once-in-a-lifetime events, but operators have done very well at adapting ‘on the fly’ to keep us all connected with their services when we needed themmost. VIAVI examines how service providers have done this on page 42 of this issue. We also discuss Power over Ethernet (page 48), DWDM and the challenges around implementing 5G (pages 30 and 34) in this issue. We are also delighted to include a special report from the first recipient of the SCTE’s new training bursary on his experience on The Cable Center’s Intrapreneurship Academy in the USA (see page 12). COVID-19 has sadly impacted the Society’s 75th anniversary celebrations this year, and the SCTE office is now closed. However, SCTE staff, working from home, are still active and ready to support members. Please email us on office@thescte.eu if you need to contact us. For its 75th anniversary year, as a gift to its members, the SCTE has made a free special edition of its online Fibre Optic Transmission for Technicians course available to members on the SCTE's Broadband Training website for all members. Please request a log-in at www.broadbandtraining.eu/lms A free special online edition of the SCTE’s Introduction to DOCSIS 3.1 course (via its new Learning Management System) has also been made available to all SCTE members. This course is free to access - please email office@broadbandtraining.eu for a username and password. To further support our members, we have also created a COVID-19 toolkit with hints, tips, advice, best practice news and guidance on working during the pandemic. This can be accessed on our website at https://www.thescte.eu/ resources/covid-19-toolkit Events in focus The SCTE Benelux online lunch lecture is now part of the special IBC Showcase, and will take place on Thursday 10 September 2020 .
